The differences in the Shih Tzu and the Chinese Imperial (Imperial Shih Tzu)

Truly there is very little difference in the two as far as genetic makeup is concerned. If sent to a lab the genetics would show both are Shih Tzu puppies/dogs (according to AKC standards).  The Chinese imperial or Imperial Shih Tzu is simply a smaller sized Shih Tzu. Based off of my experience I beleive the Imperial does have it's own genetic marker for size, as I will consistanly get litters that are 25% to 75% imperial depending on the lines of the parents. The Imperial will tend to simply grow slower, but will also mature faster and reach their mature size at a younger age.

Most Imperial Shih Tzu breeders prefer the flatter faces and smaller up-turned noses with nice short legs and bodies. However they still look and act very much like a Shih Tzu.  You also tend to see a lot more of the recessive colors in the Chinese Imperials with a lot of Solid colors vs The party look of your standard Shih Tzu.  However both Shih Tzu and Imperial Shih Tzu can be party (two toned) or solid in any color of the rainbow :)  Most of what describes a Shih Tzu will also apply to the Chinese Imperial, only the Chinese Imperial is in a smaller package.  A true Chinese Imperial Shih Tzu will be just as healthy and playful and fun loving as any Standard Shih Tzu. However they can be harder to raise as tiny puppies and tend to stay with the breeder longer. They are also less common. All of these factors results in higher prices for the smaller sizes.

While it is true that a sickly Shih Tzu can be smaller due to health reasons, this is not why the imperial Shih Tzu's are small. They are small due to their genetics that control size and growth. You can get an unhealthy Shih Tzu just as easily as you can get an unhealthy Chinese Imperial Shih Tzu.

I absolutely love the Shih Tzu of all sizes, they are Beautiful elegant dogs. All sizes deserves equal respect. I gear my program to the Small Standard and Imperial sizes...As I love them all and everyone has their own preferences.  Most of my litters will produce sizes with estimated adult weights from 6 to 11 lbs.  I will periodically get a the super tiny 4-5 lb range as well, but they are not always in every litter.
